Field guide
Reading the marks on the ground.
Locate marks follow the uniform damage-prevention colour code used across North America. Red marks electric power lines. Yellow marks gas, oil, and other flammable material. Orange marks communications, alarm and signal lines, cable, and fibre. Blue marks potable water. Green marks sewers and drains. Purple marks reclaimed water and irrigation. Pink is reserved for temporary survey markings, and white outlines the proposed excavation itself.
The colours tell the crew what is underneath, but the locate ticket and field record define the scope that applies to the dig. Keep both with the excavation file, and plan the work around the marks rather than over them.
CLI locates and marks water, electric, sewer, gas, traditional cable, and fibre optic utilities across Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia.
